History
The history of lingerie goes back thousands years, archaeologists have found remains of underwear 7,000 years old, even older than the garments we have on today (must buy some new underwear!)
Loincloths were the first forms of underwear, either in the form of a cloth which extended between the legs, covering the modesty of the wearer, sounds a bit too much like a nappy for comfort, really!
The other early underwear option was a triangle, a bit like the modern g-string, probably also the earliest known forerunner of modern pants.
The earliest underwear could also have been worn as outerwear, although in colder climes, it was necessary to wear outergarments, so the items of clothing which cover the more personal areas of the body became underwear.
The term lingerie is really just the French for underwear, sounds much sexier the way they say it though, doesn’t it?
